India announces it will ‘define BRICS in a new form’ in 2026
(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India will reshape BRICS “in a new form” when it assumes the group’s chairmanship in 2026, with a strong emphasis on addressing the priorities of the Global South.
Speaking on day two of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Modi said India's approach will be centered on people and humanity. Under India’s leadership, BRICS will stand for “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,” he explained. He noted that India’s G20 presidency similarly highlighted the needs of developing nations.
“The Global South has great expectations from BRICS,” Modi said, urging member nations to lead by example and pledging India’s full commitment to working with partners to meet shared goals.
BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010. In 2024, full membership was extended to Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, while Indonesia joined this year. More than 30 additional countries have applied to join the group.
Modi emphasized BRICS’ role in promoting a multipolar world, saying the bloc seeks a peaceful, just, and democratic international order. Before departing for Brazil, he reaffirmed India’s support for a more balanced global power structure.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the group, threatening to impose an extra 10% tariff on countries that “align” with BRICS, accusing the alliance of pursuing anti-American policies.
In a joint statement released at the end of the summit, BRICS leaders condemned unilateral tariff measures and indiscriminate trade practices, though they did not directly name the U.S.
