India Day festivities kicks off in Moscow
The festivities were attended by India’s ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, Moscow government minister Sergey Cheremin, and representatives from numerous countries, according to the festival founder and president of the Indian Cultural and National Center, Sita Sammy Kotwani.
This year’s program included the inauguration of the India Day awards, judged by a panel featuring senior Russian and Indian cultural and government figures. Awards were given across ten categories, including yoga, Ayurveda, literature, business, and humanitarian initiatives.
The festival coincided with India’s 79th Independence Day on August 15, which celebrates the nation’s liberation from British rule in 1947 and is traditionally marked with flag-raising ceremonies, cultural events, and tributes to independence leaders.
The celebrations also overlapped with an official visit to Russia by Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, who is set to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. As part of the festivities and to highlight bilateral ties, several landmark buildings along Moscow’s Novy Arbat Avenue were illuminated in the colors of the Indian flag, according to reports from the Indian Embassy.
