5.6 Magnitude Quake Jolts India-Myanmar Border Region
(MENAFN) A significant earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck the India-Myanmar border region on Friday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The earthquake occurred at 11:26 a.m. local time (0456 GMT) in the Mawlaik region of Myanmar.
The tremor originated at a depth of around 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), with its epicenter located in Myanmar's Sagaing Region, close to the border with India. EMSC confirmed the details of the seismic event, which sent shockwaves through the surrounding areas.
Mawlaik, a town in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, was at the epicenter of the earthquake, but tremors were also felt in the Indian city of Aizawl. Despite the strong shaking, there have been no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, but for now, the region remains on high alert.
