India launches new airbase near China border in Ladakh
Indian Air Force Chief Marshal A. P. Singh arrived at the Mudh-Nyoma base on Wednesday aboard a C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, marking its activation.
Situated at an altitude of about 13,000 feet (3,962 meters), the airbase “can be used by fighter jets, helicopters and transport planes” and lies roughly 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) from the Line of Actual Control separating India and China.
Reports noted that “operationalization of the airbase is expected to boost the Indian military's combat readiness in the sensitive sector,” citing unnamed officials.
Work on the base started in September 2023 under the Border Roads Organization, with construction costs estimated at approximately INR 218 crore (around $24 million).
The completion of this site increases the total number of operational Indian airbases in Ladakh to four, alongside those located in Leh, Kargil, and Thoise.
Ladakh was formally separated from Jammu and Kashmir and established as a Union Territory in August 2019.
