India, US Emphasize Expanding Strategic Partnership During Rubio Visit
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on his first official visit to the country, and highlighted what he called “very deep, very broad-based cooperation” between the two sides.
Jaishankar stated that the two countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership that has influence across multiple regions, noting that discussions are taking place during what he described as “complicated times.” He also pointed to converging interests between Washington and New Delhi across a range of international issues.
According to reports, earlier tensions in bilateral relations were linked in part to trade measures introduced by the administration of Donald Trump, including tariffs on Indian exports, as well as disagreements over diplomatic narratives concerning regional security dynamics in South Asia.
Rubio, for his part, described India and the United States as strategic allies whose cooperation extends beyond a single geographic region. He noted opportunities for collaboration in multiple global areas, including regions outside Asia, such as the Western Hemisphere.
According to reports, the discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in energy, trade, and defense sectors, reflecting an effort to broaden the scope of bilateral engagement.
Rubio arrived in India for a four-day visit that includes meetings with senior leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as planned visits to Agra and Jaipur. He is also expected to participate in the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) meeting.
According to reports, Rubio stated after meetings that India has committed to purchasing up to $500 billion worth of US goods over the next five years, with a focus on energy, technology, and agriculture.
