India Praises Strong Ties with US as Rubio Makes First Visit to New Delhi
Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar highlighted what he called “very deep, very broad-based cooperation” while hosting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on his first official visit to India.
Jaishankar said the two countries share “a comprehensive global strategic partnership” that has an impact well beyond their bilateral relationship, adding that cooperation is driven by converging interests across multiple regions and policy areas. He also noted that the discussions were taking place during what he described as “complicated times.”
The talks come after recent strains in relations linked to US tariff measures affecting Indian exports, as well as political friction over Washington’s claims regarding its role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan last year.
Rubio, for his part, described India and the United States as “strategic allies” and emphasized that the relationship extends beyond any single region. He added that both sides have opportunities to expand cooperation globally, including in areas such as the Western Hemisphere.
According to officials, the focus of the visit includes strengthening collaboration in energy, trade, defense, and broader geopolitical coordination.
