Bangladesh Sends Letters to India Over Alleged Border Pushbacks
According to reports, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Shama Obaid told a briefing in Dhaka on Monday that between 12 and 13 formal communications had been sent to New Delhi regarding the issue.
She said Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB) had intercepted several alleged attempts to push individuals across the border and has been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance along border areas.
Bangladesh and India share a 4,096-kilometer (2,545-mile) border, making it one of the longest international land boundaries in the world.
Obaid noted that both countries have agreed mechanisms in place for verifying the nationality of undocumented migrants and managing their return in an orderly manner.
“There is a mechanism” between the two sides, she said, warning that continued disputes over the issue could strain bilateral relations.
Separately, the Border Guard Bangladesh reported that it had blocked at least 18 alleged attempts since June 4, during which India’s Border Security Force was accused of trying to push around 180 people into Bangladesh.
