EU Proposal Targets India-Linked Entities in New Russia Sanctions Plan

(MENAFN) The European Union has put forward a new sanctions package against Russia that includes entities connected to India, a move that could complicate the approval process of a recently established trade agreement between the EU and India.

The proposed measures focus on sectors such as energy, cryptocurrency, financial services, trade, and fisheries, according to reports referencing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This would mark the 21st sanctions package introduced against Russia.

Among the new restrictions are measures related to drone production and expanded export controls affecting 50 companies, including firms linked to countries such as China, Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, the UAE, and India, as stated in a social media post by top EU diplomat Kaja Kallas.

At this stage, the specific names and details of the Indian entities included in the sanctions list have not been disclosed.

For the package to take effect, it must receive unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states. According to reports, a decision is expected by July 15.

The proposed measures also include a temporary freeze on the EU’s Russian oil price cap mechanism and additional restrictions on the resale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers destined for Russia.

The inclusion of India-linked entities comes despite ongoing efforts to finalize a major trade agreement between Brussels and New Delhi, which was agreed earlier this year after negotiations that began in 2007. EU officials have previously described the deal as the “mother of all deals.”

The proposal has drawn criticism from diplomatic circles. Former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal called for retaliatory measures against EU companies operating in Pakistan and argued that the sanctions are not legally valid under international law.

India has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that are not endorsed by the United Nations and has questioned their legitimacy, especially in light of European countries continuing to import Russian gas and LNG.

The new sanctions would be added to 81 existing listings that already target Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, military-industrial sector, individuals accused of human rights violations, and propagandists, according to reports.
