Indonesia to Extend QRIS Cross-Border Payments to Saudi Arabia, India

(MENAFN) Indonesia is set to broaden the international reach of its QR-based payment system, QRIS, by expanding its cross-border transaction services to Saudi Arabia and India, according to the country’s central bank.

The initiative aims to simplify financial transactions for Indonesians traveling abroad while also supporting inbound tourism, particularly from India.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said the expansion would be especially beneficial for Indonesians performing religious travel, including umrah and hajj pilgrimages in Saudi Arabia, as well as for Indian tourists visiting Indonesia.

“Following our cooperation with Japan, China, and South Korea, we seek your support as we expand to Saudi Arabia for umrah and hajj pilgrims and to India for Indian tourists,” he said on Wednesday.

QRIS, or Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard, was first introduced in 2019 as a unified digital payment framework. It integrates multiple payment platforms into a single system, enabling compatibility between banks and digital wallets.

The planned expansion reflects Indonesia’s broader push to strengthen digital financial connectivity with key international partners and improve ease of payment for travelers across borders.
